Half of Instagram Creators Are Below 1% Engagement: 2026 Benchmarks From 3,280 Accounts

The median Instagram engagement rate is 1.0% across 3,280 creator accounts. Benchmarks by follower tier and niche, and what counts as good in 2026.

On this page

If you have ever been told that 3% is a "normal" Instagram engagement rate, the data says otherwise. We looked at 3,280 Instagram creator accounts with at least 1,000 followers that SocialHipper tracks, and the median engagement rate is 1.0%. Half of all creators are below it.

That matters for brands deciding who to work with, and for creators pitching themselves. Here is what typical engagement actually looks like in October 2026.

How we measured engagement

Engagement rate here is the average likes plus comments on a creator's 20 most recent posts, divided by their follower count, times 100. The data comes from public business and creator accounts through Meta's official Graph API. We excluded accounts under 1,000 followers and obvious outliers above 50%.

Engagement by follower tier

Follower tier Accounts Median engagement Top 25% start at
Nano (1K to 10K) 1,005 1.57% 3.38%
Micro (10K to 100K) 1,157 0.79% 2.07%
Mid-tier (100K to 500K) 686 0.80% 1.77%
Macro (500K to 1M) 170 0.82% 2.05%
Mega (1M+) 262 0.79% 1.88%

Two things stand out:

  1. Nano creators engage about twice as much as everyone else. Below 10,000 followers, the median is 1.57%. Above it, the median drops to around 0.8% and then barely moves, all the way up to accounts with millions of followers.
  2. "Good" is a moving target. A micro creator at 2% is in the top quarter of their tier. A nano creator needs 3.4% to say the same.

Engagement by niche

Median engagement for niches with at least 60 tracked Instagram creators:

Niche Accounts Median engagement
Comedy 242 1.42%
Photography 299 1.30%
Art 220 1.21%
Sports 283 1.15%
Education 181 1.12%
Food 699 1.06%
Lifestyle 563 1.02%
Entertainment 356 1.01%
Travel 550 0.96%
Fitness 357 0.96%
Gaming 144 0.95%
Music 252 0.95%
Parenting 254 0.89%
DIY 144 0.87%
Beauty 400 0.85%
Technology 227 0.85%
Business 476 0.84%
Fashion 397 0.80%
Health 142 0.78%
Finance 125 0.69%

Comedy and visual niches (photography, art) earn the most interaction per follower. Fashion, health and finance, some of the most sponsored categories, sit at the bottom. A fashion creator at 1.5% is doing far better than a comedy creator at the same number.

How YouTube compares

YouTube engagement is measured differently (likes plus comments divided by views), so it isn't directly comparable, but the pattern is steadier. Across 550 YouTube creators, the median sits between 1.9% and 2.3% in every tier from 10,000 subscribers up.

What this means for brands

  • Compare creators against their own tier and niche, not a blanket 3% rule. Most good creators would fail that test.
  • Nano creators buy you attention cheaply. Twice the engagement rate, at a fraction of the price per post.
  • Treat unusually high numbers with care. A large account far above its tier's top quarter can mean a viral post, or engagement pods. Look at several recent posts, not just the average.

What this means for creators

  • Know your percentile. Telling a brand "my 2.1% puts me in the top quarter of micro creators" is a far stronger pitch than the number alone.
  • Don't panic about a 1% rate. For accounts above 10,000 followers, that's above the median.
