How Fast Do Creators Grow? Follower Growth Benchmarks 2026 (2,073 Creators)

The typical creator gained just 0.37% followers a month in 2026: 0.28% on Instagram and 0.79% on YouTube. 36% of Instagram creators lost followers, and growing 5% a month puts you in the top 4 to 7%.

On this page

In short: most creators grow far more slowly than growth advice suggests. Tracking 2,073 Instagram, YouTube and Pinterest creators for about five months in 2026, the typical one gained 0.37% followers a month, roughly 4.5% a year. Instagram creators grew a median 0.28% a month and YouTube channels 0.79%. Losing followers is normal: 36% of Instagram creators shrank over the period, including half of accounts with more than a million followers. Growing 5% or more a month puts a creator in the top 4 to 7%.

Follower growth is the number creators watch most and the one brands ask about first, yet there are few honest benchmarks: most published figures come from a handful of viral case studies. This report uses the follower history SocialHipper records each time it refreshes a creator, so it shows what typical accounts actually did between May and October 2026.

How we measured it

We took every creator with at least 1,000 followers and at least 60 days between their first and latest follower count (the median gap was 159 days), and turned each one's change into a monthly growth rate. We left out 45 accounts whose counts jumped or fell by more than half in the period, which usually signals an account change rather than growth. We report medians, so a few fast-growing accounts don't distort the picture.

Over a year, the median Instagram creator's rate works out to about 3.4% and the median YouTube channel's to about 10%. A creator in Instagram's top quarter grows about 15% a year; YouTube's top quarter, about 25%. Pinterest accounts (156 tracked) were flat at the median, with over half shrinking.

Smaller accounts grow faster, in percentage terms

On YouTube the same pattern holds: channels with 10,000 to 100,000 subscribers grew a median 0.95% a month (about 280 subscribers), against 0.11% for channels with over a million. Big accounts gain more people in absolute terms, but on Instagram the largest ones are, more often than not, slowly shrinking.

Fast growth is rare

About half of all creators (49%) moved by less than half a percent a month in either direction. Only 4% of Instagram creators and 7% of YouTube channels grew 5% or more a month, and on Instagram that fell to 2% or less above 100,000 followers. If an account claims steady double-digit monthly growth, it is either in a breakout moment or the numbers deserve a closer look.

What this means

  • Creators: judge growth against these numbers, not against viral stories. Growing 1% a month on Instagram puts you in roughly the top quarter. Losing a few followers in a month is normal, especially as Instagram removes inactive accounts.
  • Brands: steady growth is a better sign than a big follower count, and a sudden jump with no viral post behind it is worth checking with our free fake follower checker. Engagement still matters more than either; see the 2026 engagement benchmarks.
  • Everyone: YouTube audiences grow and stay more steadily than Instagram ones. Only 10% of channels lost subscribers, against 36% of Instagram accounts.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good follower growth rate on Instagram?

In SocialHipper's 2026 data from 1,363 Instagram creators, the median grew 0.28% a month (about 3.4% a year). Growing 1.1% a month puts an account in the top quarter, and 2.6% a month in the top 10%.

How fast do YouTube channels grow?

The median channel with 10,000+ subscribers grew 0.79% a month in 2026, about 10% a year. The top quarter grew at least 1.85% a month. Channels with 10,000 to 100,000 subscribers grew fastest in percentage terms, at a median 0.95% a month.

Is it normal to lose Instagram followers?

Yes. Over about five months in 2026, 36% of Instagram creators SocialHipper tracks lost followers, including 52% of accounts with more than a million followers. Unfollows and Instagram's removal of inactive accounts mean even healthy accounts can shrink slightly.

Do smaller accounts grow faster?

In percentage terms, yes. Instagram accounts with 1,000 to 10,000 followers grew a median 0.45% a month, against 0.26% for 100,000 to 500,000 and slightly below zero for accounts over a million. Larger accounts still add more followers in absolute numbers.

Data: follower counts recorded by SocialHipper between May and October 2026 for 2,073 creators with 1,000+ followers and at least 60 days of history (median 159 days). Monthly growth rates compounded from each creator's first and latest count; medians reported. Accounts whose counts changed by more than half were excluded. Updated October 2026.
